Zagreb to Dubrovnik by car: route, costs and drop-off

Driving from Zagreb to Dubrovnik can combine a stay in Croatia’s capital with a holiday in the south. Before booking, decide whether you want a direct journey with rest stops or a trip with an overnight stay and sightseeing. This affects the number of rental days, your costs and your return time.

If you are collecting the car in Zagreb, explore our Zagreb car rental options and state that you would like to return it in Dubrovnik when you enquire. Availability, locations and the full quote are confirmed in advance.

Which route should you take from Zagreb to Dubrovnik?

One of the main options follows the A1 motorway towards the Ploče area, then connecting roads to Pelješac Bridge, across Pelješac and onwards to Dubrovnik. The motorway does not run all the way to Dubrovnik. The final part of the journey includes other roads with different driving conditions.

The route via Pelješac Bridge allows you to stay within Croatia without passing through Neum. Even so, check the entire route suggested by your navigation before departure. If you choose a route through Bosnia and Herzegovina or add a visit there, tell the rental company about this separate border-crossing plan in advance.

Check HAK’s road conditions report for current roadworks, closures and weather conditions. Use the official Croatian Motorways map to locate motorway facilities, rest areas and toll stations. This guide is for planning; follow current road signs and traffic information on the day of travel.

How much time should you allow?

Set aside a travel day for the Zagreb to Dubrovnik journey. A navigation estimate usually does not cover the full time between collecting the car and checking in at your accommodation. Add time for the handover, leaving the city, breaks, a meal, refuelling and reaching your parking space.

Avoid planning the drive around a tight flight or return deadline. If you arrive in Zagreb late, consider staying overnight and setting off after a rest. Planned breaks also make the schedule easier when travelling with children.

A direct drive or sightseeing along the way?

For a direct journey, choose rest areas along the route and leave sightseeing for the following days. A break does not need to turn into a lengthy detour from the motorway if your aim is to reach Dubrovnik that day.

For a sightseeing trip, add an overnight stay or extra days. Visiting a town or natural attraction involves additional driving, parking and time outside the car. Check tickets and opening hours before adding a stop to your itinerary.

What should you include in the journey’s cost?

  • Rental: the number of days, chosen vehicle and agreed extras.
  • Fuel: this depends on the route, car, load and driving style.
  • Tolls: check your entry and exit stations and vehicle category in the official HAC toll price list.
  • Parking and accommodation: include stops along the way and your arrival in Dubrovnik.
  • Location fees: distinguish the one-way drop-off fee from any city pickup fee.

Compare the full quote rather than just the daily rental rate. A rental for the same number of days can have a different total when the pickup or return location changes. Check the deposit separately as funds required under the rental terms.

What is the fee for returning the car in Dubrovnik?

With Efex, collecting a car in Zagreb and returning it in Dubrovnik carries a €170 one-way drop-off fee. The rental price and selected extras are charged separately.

If you choose the “In Zagreb” city pickup option, a further €50 applies for that location. In this example, city pickup and Dubrovnik return add up to €220 in location fees. Check the individual items and final total before confirming.

Pickup and return both in Dubrovnik have different conditions: there is no additional location fee for that combination. See our Dubrovnik car rental information for details.

Prepare for arrival in Dubrovnik and the car handover

If you are going to your accommodation first, check parking and the permitted approach route in advance. Traffic restrictions apply around the Old Town; renting a car does not automatically grant access. Read our Dubrovnik parking guide and confirm the details with your host.

If you are returning the car before a flight, agree the exact meeting point, time and fuel policy. Allow extra time for traffic, the vehicle check and airport procedures. For the start of your trip, use our Zagreb rental car pickup checklist too.
