Before driving to Dubrovnik, choose where you will park and check whether you can reach it by your planned route. These are separate questions: an available parking space does not mean every approach road is open to every vehicle.
A car can be useful for the journey from Zagreb, airport arrival and excursions around the region. Plan to explore the Old Town on foot. A few arrangements before departure can save time searching for parking with luggage in the car.
1. Ask your accommodation about parking and access
A listing that says “parking available” does not give you everything needed to plan arrival. Request the exact car park location and access directions. Check whether parking is included in your accommodation price, requires a reservation and is accessible at your arrival time.
- Is the parking space beside the property or at another address?
- Is a space confirmed for your dates or subject to availability?
- Are there garage height, width or access restrictions?
- How far will you walk with luggage, and are there steps?
- Does the host need the vehicle registration number in advance?
With a rental car, you may not know the registration number yet. Agree when to send it. Do not assume a parking reservation or access permit is arranged just because your accommodation is booked.
2. Check the special traffic zone
A special traffic zone operates around the Old Town. Renting a car does not automatically give unrestricted access. Use the official City of Dubrovnik portal for access information, applications and parking reservations.
Compare your host instructions with current rules and road signs before driving. A navigation route is not permission to enter. Resolve any uncertainty before reaching the zone entrance.
3. Compare parking for the whole visit
Sanitat lists official parking zones, locations and prices. Pile and Žičara – lower plateau are listed in zone 0, with a link to the parking reservation system. Check conditions for your dates, duration and vehicle before paying.
Compare the full cost of your intended stay, not just the first hour. Include the walk to your destination and back. Travellers with children, heavy luggage or limited mobility may find a closer suitable option more useful than a cheaper space requiring a long climb.
At the car park, check the zone, permitted duration, payment method and the registration number entered when purchasing a ticket. Keep confirmation and set a return reminder. Do not assume a ticket for one location applies at another.
4. Arriving at Dubrovnik Airport

Prepare the accommodation address and verified parking access route before collecting the vehicle. If you arrive before check-in, ask whether you can leave the car or luggage early. Do not plan to stop at the city gates without checking permitted locations and conditions.
5. Driving from Zagreb

Plan Zagreb–Dubrovnik as a separate travel day with breaks. Check HAK traffic information before departure and advise your host of the approximate arrival time. Arranged parking is particularly helpful after a long drive.
Will you use a car every day?
